DeYoung Trying To Muddy Waters With AOCDS Independent Expenditure

The Cassie DeYoung campaign is desperate to avoid an endorsement of Pat Bates at tonight's OC GOP Central Committee meeting.

A key argument they have been making to Central Committee members is that Pat Bates is a union lackey and Cassie DeYoung doesn't have organized union support. This is from her letter to Central Committee members:

Unlike my opponent who has relied on over $130,000 in County Union “Independent Expenditures” to support her campaign for Supervisor, my campaign has no independent expenditures from Union PACs, and I have not accepted contributions from Union PACs.

As my blogpen colleague Keith Carlson pointed out, independent expenditures are just that -- independent.

Cassie DeVisive Appeals For Party Unity

Here's the letter 5th Supervsior District candidate Cassie DeYoung e-mailed out to OC Republican Party Central Committee members -- hoping to stave off a vote at tonight's meeting in support of her opponent, Pat Bates.

It's difficult to take this appeal seriously in light of the manner in which DeYoung has been campaigning for Democrat votes. DeYoung yhas brought this on herself, and deserves it if the Central Committee endorses Pat Bates.

DeNdorsement

I just got an email from Cathryn DeYoung that appears to have gone to all OC GOP committee members.  The quick summary: please don't endorse anyone for Sup Monday night.  Why not?  Because:

• DeYoung's a Republican;
• DeYoung's done many Republican things and supported many Republican causes;
• DeYoung's not taking union cash--but a union dropped a $130,000 I.E. for Bates;
• The media is attacking the Republican Party, and an endorsement will only increase their attacks;
• An endorsement would splinter the party; and
• The party should remain neutral on this non-partisan race.

5th SD Mailbox: DeYoung Tries To Be A Republican Again

In the wake of her Democratapalooza tour of South County during which she bad-mouthed the OC GOP and touted how much she had in common with Democrats and bragging about her "Green friend" Karl Warkomski, Cassie DeYoung has sent out this mailer to 5th SD Reps touting her "conservative principles."

Why the right-ward zag after a long left-ward zig? The same reason Cassie is now calling members of the OC GOP Central Committee: her "I'm Just Like You!" courtship of Democrats is likely to impel the OC GOP Central Committee shift from neutrality to outright endorsement of Pat Bates on Monday evening.

Cassie DeYoung better hope her Democratic lurch gets her some votes, because she's likely to pay a big price for it.

5th SD Mailbox: Pat Bates Transportation Mailer Lands

It's a busy day in 5th Supervisor District Mailboxes. While Cassie goes green, Pat Bates talks about easing traffic congestion as a top quality of life issue.

The mailer emphasizes Bates' support for completing the 241 tollroad -- an issue on which Cassie DeYoung has given vacillation a bad name.

5th SD Mailbox: Another Green Mailer From DeYoung

Here's another, longer mailer touting Cassie DeYoung as the environmental candidate -- including one of Supervisor Tom Wilson's famous non-endorsement endorsements.

Interesting how Wilson's quote touts DeYoung as someone who can work with the Congress and the legislature to secure federal and state funding, considering how DeYoung has made enemies of the only two OC congressmen -- Gary Miller and Ken Calvert -- who are inclined to bring home the federal bacon.

Cassie DeYoung Among DeDemocrats

Cassie DeYoung spoke to the South Orange County Democratic Club on September 26, as part of her recent Democratapalooza tour. Red County/OC Blog managed to obatin a transcript of her remarks. Here are some highlights:

Republican? Who, Me?

"The Sierra Club has endorsed me as a candidate for Orange County Supervisor. The Orange County League of Conservation Voters just last week also endorsed me for Orange County Supervisor. I’m very proud to say that Joan Irvine Smith and Richard O’Neill are also supporting me in my effort for Orange County Supervisor… So I guess they like what they see."

"My other caption other than the environment... is the transportation issue. That’s kinda one of the first battles that I’ve had with the powers that be, so to speak. The two Republicans, uh, Congressman, you know… they were identified as the most corrupt Congressman in the United States."

"I’m running against an opponent who’s backed be ALL the Republican politicos. I, of course, do not have the endorsement of but a few Republican city councilmembers and pretty much EVERY Democrat city councilmember in South County – even Karl Warkomski, who is my Green buddy."

A DeCrummy Thing To Do

Peggy Lowe at Total Buzz picked up where my post left off and spoke with both John Moorlach and Cassie DeYoung.

Does anyone really believe Cassie DeYoung felt threatened? Are DeYoung and her campaign advisors the one who don't see this is a transparent play for cheap sympathy while squeezing just a little more mileage out of the defunct Measure N issue?

“I’ve never had in my political career someone say to me that if i didn’t do something that they wouldn’t endorse me. That’s an outright threat, no question about it.”

Given that Cassie has run an opportunistic, principle-free campaign, I suppose she would be shocked that someone would refuse to endorse on the basis of political principle.

DeYoung said she went public with the “threat” because people need to know what county politics are like and because term limits are an important issue for residents.

“This is exactly what’s wrong with county politics, that they feel they can bully you around,” she said.

Like a I said, a transparent  attempt to squeeze some more mileage out of the anti-Measure N position while playing the victim.

And I think it's safe to say Cassie's political acquaintances are going to think twice before leaving her a phone message or sending her an e-mail.

DeYoung Accuses Moorlach Of Political Intimidation

Moorlach Endorsement of Bates Tied to DeYoung Support for Term Limits

ORANGE COUNTY - County Supervisor candidate Cathryn DeYoung today released a recorded cell phone message from County Treasurer and 2nd District Supervisor-elect John Moorlach which suggests that his endorsement of DeYoung’s opponent was the enforcement of a political threat.

On August 13, 2006, John Moorlach left a message on the cell phone of 5th District Supervisor candidate Cathryn DeYoung.  He told DeYoung she must withdraw her opposition to Measure N, a County ballot measure designed to extend term limits for Supervisors.  If she did not, Moorlach threatened to endorse DeYoung’s opponent Pat Bates.

Moorlach said in his message:
