Fabulous post. I complement you on an accurate, useful summary. For example, I appreciate that you point at that Thanksgiving was originally viewed as a "Northern Thang" (I'm a native Texan)

Going even further back in our history, Caroline Baum's annual Thanksgiving post describes what made those earliest Thanksgivings possible: individual responsibility and free enterprise.

Our Founding Fathers brought communitarianism with them from Old England, but quickly embraced principles familiar to any modern conservative.

I can't tell if you're being facetious or not tyler. The transformation wasn't quick. It took a long time for Americans to jettison state affiliated churches, the tenets of Mercantilism, and royal paternalism. It all coalesced just about the time Adam Smith published his "Wealth of Nations" - 150 years after the Pilgrims landed.
