Bladerunner

Yada, yada, yada. Lots of liberals value the intitiative process too--just ask the clean government types(Prop. 9) teachers(Prop 98) and environmentalists(Coastal Act of 1972 and the anti-Devore/anti-nuclear measure they lost with in 76). It

What's interesting is that some Republicans like to put verification measures(some would call roadblocks) on voting-like picture id's--and yet oppose similar verification measures on campaign carneys that have no roots in our community. I'm far less concerned about the Republic Women of OC gathering signatures because they are involved in their community and would have no reason to falsify their name. Campaign carneys, drifters who move from region to region and state to state and unlike volunteers are paid up to $10 a signature--have all the incentive in the world to commit the kind of fraud we saw in the OC and Sen Berdoo last election cycle.

It all needs to be weighed out so that the restrictions are not so odius that we constructively eliminate the ability of people to put initiatives on the ballot. That being said, sunlight is a great disinfectant and disclosure requirements of who these people are working for and that they are paid, seem to bring some light to the process that doesn't inpede the ability of people and groups to get their message accross.
