A troll through the OC Register has produced the following comments and observations. Hold me accountable for all of them ...
- Turn off the news this week unless you want to be repulsed by what is sure to be some of the most cartoonish anti-war commentary from the leftists on the Hill you will ever hear. They have been working on their, "General Petraeus is wrong and the surge is a disaster" speech for months. The politicization of a war that countless American heroes are fighting is going to hit all-time highs this week. These people have no shame, and for this politicking to get worse than it has already been will require an intense commitment to shamelessness and anti-Americanism. They will not disappoint.
- Steven Greenhut's article on 9/11 today featured this doozy: "The 9/11 attacks were bad, but ...". In the Libertarian decrying of eavesdropping on terrorist' phone calls, I continue to wait for them to at least admit that the potential abuses of the Patriot Act are just that - potential. The fact that thus far the tools in the toolbox of the US Patriot Act have been exclusively used to protect America from murderous terrorists is always ignored. I am all for an honest and intelligent conversation about the pros and cons of certain measures in a post-9/11 society, but when reasonable concerns about precedent turn into an obvious dismissal of the threat the Islamo-Fascists represent, it is time to converse elsewhere. Radical isolationism does not have a friend in the Founding Fathers, and stirring Orwellian paranoia only works so long. Eventually, a grown-up conversation will be necessary.
- The mere existence of Chapman's economic team in this county is a blessing we can not take for granted. Dr. Adibi eloquently arguing for the merits of recessions in a true free market stands in stark contrast to any of the Keynesian and irresponsible nonsense we are forced to read in the NY and LA Times on a daily basis. While their conversations currently center around what shape and size a government bailout of irresponsible homeowners ought to look like, the OC Register showcases Dr. Adibi in all his luster pointing out the ancient truism that whatsoever a man sows, this shall he also reap. There is no better weapon against future bad economic behavior than letting past and present bad economic behavior meet its just reward.
You're right, DB. The Petraeus report is bound to be politicized - by both sides.
It's easy to criticize the "war" critics as "anti-american" - damn sissies, tired of reading about American kids getting blown up by homemade bombs and stockades full of pre-adolescent enemies).
More subtle and harder to pin down is the anti-americanism of launching off into a massive foreign intervention, grossly enlarging the national debt, overseeing vast bureaucracies of suspect efficacy - at least anti-american from a conservative stand point.
If big government is your cup 'o tea, then Bush is your boy.
