Director Mitch

There are several problems with the editorial:

> voters rejected an El Toro airport, in
> part because they expected John Wayne to
> grow

No. Even if John Wayne "grew", it could never accommodate large body airplanes or the volumes proposed at El Toro. JWA can also can never have immigration/customs areas for international flights or international cargo. At best everyone knew JWA could only add incremental increases to smaller, North American flights, which is NOT what El Toro was pitched as: an alternative to LAX.

So don't compare apples to oranges.

The best line:

> Constraining airport noise impacts on the
> neighbors is an understandable goal...BUT

That "but" always appears for wording that amounts to "we don't give a damn".

Len Kranser

Mitch, First a couple of facts:

You are incorrect about never having customs at JWA. The OC Register, August 12, 2005 reported on the current expansion project that "Two of the new gates would be designed with U.S. Customs facilities - so that JWA can add a limited amount of international flights." I presume that could cover Mexico and Canada, the two most visited international destinations. Air Canada has been on the JWA waiting list for slots for years.

Of course, JWA could never provide as much service as El Toro which was planned to operate around the clock and draw up to 5 million annual passengers from neighboring counties. I don't think that OC voters particulary wanted LAX South with jumbo jets and the associated freeway traffic in the middle of our county.

NIMBYitis

Hey Lenny,

if you were not willing to have an airport at El Toro, then don't you dare point your fingers at John Wayne for having caps. And you wonder why you get attacked on here all the time.

Why you don't go play in your "Great Park". Have you even taken a baloon ride yet? You spew enough hot air to make it float!
