Governor Schwarzenegger Appoints John Cruz Appointments Secretary
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today announced the appointment of John G. Cruz as appointments secretary.
“The people of California will be well-served with John as a member of my administration,” said Governor Schwarzenegger. “He shares my commitment to excellence and will assist me in continuing to appoint the best and the brightest individuals from diverse backgrounds in state service.”
Cruz has served as a commissioner on the California Gambling Control Commission (CGCC) since 2005. He has been licensed to practice law in California since 1979 and specialized in real estate, business and transactional law. In 1992, Cruz founded the law firm of Daehnke & Cruz, where he practiced until becoming a commissioner for CGCC. Previous to that, he served as an associate and as of counsel with several law firms located in Southern California, as well as having his own private practice.
Cruz is and has been an active member of his community in a variety of civic endeavors. From 2002 to 2007, he served as an appointed member to the Federal Service Impasses Panel, where he worked to resolve impasses between federal agencies and unions representing federal employees. In addition, Cruz is a former officer and trustee for the Orange County Hispanic Bar Association and previously served as a member of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Technical Reserve Program. Currently, he is a co-founding and active member of Hispanic 100 and also serves on the Santa Ana Education Foundation Board of Directors.
“I am honored Governor Schwarzenegger has asked me to serve in his administration as appointments secretary,” said Cruz. “I look forward to working with the Governor to bring together talented people that meet the highest standards of integrity to serve the people of California.”
Cruz, 56, of San Clemente, earned a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Michigan Law School and a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration from California State University, Fullerton. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $133,728. Cruz is a Republican.
The appointments secretary oversees the appointment making process to positions for which the Governor is responsible. Among other things, the appointments secretary sets guidelines for evaluating resumes, interviews and background checks as well as represents the Governor at public forums which provide opportunities to recruit candidates for appointment.
