On Monday, the OCTA Board of Directors voted to send a recommend support for SB 974 (a $30 tax on cargo containers) back to the Legislative Committee, which had earlier recommend against supporting the cargo container tax (I should note that the "support" recommendation was condition on certain changes being made to the bill).
The Legislative Committee yesterday recommended opposing SB 974 unless it is amended. I'm not sure if that asks for different amendments than were requested earlier. It comes back before the full Board of Directors on August 27.
I don't believe the OCTA Board of Director's vote will have that much impact one way or the other on the fate of SB 974. But it's an interesting case to follow, because it is votes such as these that can come back to haunt local elected officials at election time -- especially if they are trying to vault to a higher office. For the most part, that possibility doesn't occur to them -- and the staff who want their directors or councilmembers to support these kinds of bills don't remind them.
I believe Director Nguyen was the first person to oppose this measure. She actually fought agaisnt this at the Long Beach Camber.
