I just came out of Assembly Republican leadership and it looks like the vote to borrow an additional $146 million for prison healthcare has been delayed in the face of unified Republican opposition. Since this is a two-thirds vote bill at least six Republicans would be needed to vote for the bill, assuming all of the Democrats approve of it.
In the wake of the Plata Decision's doubling of healthcare expenses for California prisoners, they now enjoy per capita expenditures of $5,800 a year -- far above the average Californian.
The Legislature has to assert its authority and put a stop to this non-stop blank check draw on the taxpayers' money.
All the best,
Chuck DeVore
State Assemblyman, 70th District
