I spotted this post by Red County blogger Joseph Turner over at our San Bernardino County blog. It's not an OC story, but I think Joseph's post is germane to the groupthink dominant among public school district trustees everywhere. It's regarding the San Bernardino City School District's approval of a charter school:
Regardless, I found the concerns of SBCUSD President Marlin Brown noteworthy. The article reads:
Marlin Brown, president of the San Bernardino school board, said he's wary of charters because of their track record.
Is he serious? Track record! This is coming from a member of the San Bernardino City Unified School Board! A school district that graduates 42% of its students, is one third English-learner and has abysmal rankings and test scores. And he has the audacity to talk about track record...
You can read the entire post here.
Don't sell trustees too short Jubal. i think alot of them agree that charter schools have an important part to play in the educational mix. The fact that some charter schools have had some significant problems is something a school board member should be concerned with. Unfortunately, there are some that use this as an excuse to say no to all charters but the 4 or 5 trustees I have talked to about it believe that with the right set up charter schools have a role to play in their district.

Yeah, but let's face it: charter schools are anathema to the unions who control so many trustees. The monopoly must be preserved! I believe that there is actually a subcutaneous belief that it's better for all to fail than for some to succeed.
I had the displeasure last week-end of watching a couple of the LAUSD trustees make idiots of themselves on the issue.

"watching a couple of the LAUSD trustees make idiots of themselves on the issue"
The way they flipped on that Green Dot issue makes you wonder what the heck is really going on.
Green Dot has done one heck of a job turning around failing schools, so the decision to deny the new charter applications was strange.
Maybe Steve Barr can do his turn around magic in SAUSD as well?

Huh? The Green Dot charter was approved, right? After the flip back on a second hearing. Korenstein and Lamotte were the "idiots" who decided to go down with the sinking ship. Put our kids in warehouses? The shame!

The graduation rate does need to be looked at and perhaps criticized, but why does every kid need to be on the college track? Because higher ed is big business?
School districts should return to offering an Industrial arts option. A good mechanic can make $100,000 in OC, and the kid would not then be lost to an alternative culture and economy.

"A good mechanic can make $100,000 in OC,"
So can a bad one.

BTW Pat, I was intrigued by the phrase "altenative culture and economy." Can you elaborate?

RP---I agree that there are trustees out there who think like that. But alot don't. they'll try and take care of the CTA in salary engotiations but stand fast that deciding on a charter school is not something that needs to be vetted by the union.
