I caught up with MWDOC Director and 60th Assembly District candidate Larry Dick today on cel phone. After taking some good-natured ribbing for not mentioning Larry's considerable talent as a raconteur in yesterday's post, we talked for a while about his candidacy.
[NOTE: 60th AD incumbent and GOP hero Assemblyman Bob Huff is eligible to run for a third term, but he's running instead for the 29th Senate District seat hled by termed-out Sen.Bob Margett]
Larry, a resident of beautiful Orange, has already racked up some significant endorsements, although at the moment I'm only at liberty to mention his endorsement by Senate Republican Leader Dick Ackerman. Larry is still in the process of interviewing consultants.
The 60th Assembly District is a safe GOP seat. The part registration breakdown is 48% GOP and 30% Democratic. It's split between Orange County, San Bernardino and Los Angeles counties. According to the CTMA website (citing the California target Book) it encompasses
...the eastern Los Angeles County communities of La Mirada, La Habra Heights, a sliver (8%) if Whittier, Diamond Bar, Walnut, a small (13%) portion of San Dimas, and most (59%) of the unincorporated Rowland Heights; Orange County communities of Villa Park, Anaheim Hills, portion (16%) of Anaheim, most (61%) of La Habra, a portion (36%) of Orange, and slightly more than half (53%) of Yorba Linda; and all of the city of Chino Hills in San Bernardino County.
Republican voters are apportioned among the three counties roughly in this quantity:
- Orange County: 55,000 GOP voters
- Los Angeles: 35,000 GOP voters
- San Bernardino: 15,000 voters
From what I hear, there are two other candidates looking at the race: Mike Radlovic, who I first met when he was LA County field rep for Mike Huffington for U.S. Senate (I was a press secretary on that most surreal of campaigns). Mike ran for the 60th AD GOP nomination in 1998 and narrowly lost to Bob Pacheco, (24.65% to 21.87%). Bob Huff finished third in that primary with 13.57%, so persistence does pay off. Radlovic is a former executive director of the Los Angeles County GOP in the mid-1990s and ran for the 30th Congressional District in 1988. I'm not sure which LA County city Radlovic lives in.
The other candidate is Curt Hagman, the Mayor Pro Tem of Chino Hills in San Bernardino County, and is in the middle of his first term on the council. Otherwise, I don't know much about him other than he is President and CEO of Apex Bail Bonds, Inc which "has five locations in Southern California and employs a staff of 22," and I believe he'll have the support of some leading SB County citizens.
Thus far, each county in this AD is represented by at least one candidate.
Ah! Mike Radlovic. That name sure brings back memories; especially about the swimming pool at El Roble Jr. High School.

Bail Bond Guys don't normally have super clean backgrounds but maybe this guy is the exception. I think it looks good for Larry!

Curt Hagman is not only clean, he is also hard working guy for his community.
He will do fine in AD60.
