Same here as with Duvall. Both candidates pursued the firefighter endorsement. Silva didn't get it. McGill did.

And like I pointed out on that thread as well. Spitzer claims endorsement by the same group. Does that make him a union lacky?

HB GOP

Mike McGill is a shameless hypocrite! The firefighters are one of the very worst Sacramento unions - they are the ones behind all the attacks on the Governor and they are the ones running those ads for Phil Angelides.

Jubal

No, it doesn't make Spitzer a "union lackey" because he has an established record of activism on behalf of taxpayers.

As for McGill, I don't know. He makes a great deal of noise about being the "true conservative" in the race, but hasn't directly addressed some problematic votes and stances(in favor reducing the 2/3 threshold foro tax increases and the CenterLine).

As for Simonoff, union endorsements are a strong indicator where he comes from, given his record on eminent domain and using tax money to fund a de facto political campaign against a landowner's private property rights.

Spitzer is unopposed, so there is no downside for the unions in endorsing him.

In a contested primary that serves as the real general election -- as in the 67th and 72nd ADs -- unions are presented with some real choices between viable contenders. Like any other special interest, their choice is going to be guided by which candidate is friendlier to their interests -- in this case, better pay and benefits.

In both the 67th and 72nd AD, the respective public employee unions in question feel McGill and Simonoff best fit that description.

I guess that is just about as good a rationalization as any given the dilemma at hand. Especially considering some of the very public statements and stances McGill has taken regarding the usurious pensions approved by Silva (which he will receive btw) for the OCSD and County employees.

So let me get this straight.

Public safety endorsements for an unopposed GOP = Good conservative.

Public safety endorsements for an opposed GOP = Bad conservative.

Thanks for the clarification.

Laff Riot

Oops.

I should have said.

Pubic safety endorsements for an opposed GOP = Bad conservative unless approved by the OC Blogpen.

Jubal

Laff Riot:

A valiant effort to twist my comment, but I neither stated nor inferred any such thing.

I don't know if they publish a "Logic For Dummies" book, but you might want to buy it if they do.

Laff Riot

Jubal. I thought you didn't permit personal attacks on this blog. Maybe I misunderstood.

Jubal

It wasn't a personal attack, because you are obviously not dumb. There is a famous series of self-education books entitled "[subject matter] for Dummies" that many people all along the IQ scale buy in order to quickly educate themselves about various subjects.

Laff Riot

Tell you what Jubal. Even I got a chuckle out of my typing faux pas.

Since you probably want to keep this board G-Rated feel free to edit accordingly.

Jubal

I will do so expeditiously. And among us hasn't made that particular typo?

Ace

McGill was stupid to accept this money - he just took one issue against Silva off the table.

Yea, those damn firsfighters. Everybody hates the firefighters. Silva should attack McGill for having the firefighters support.

Who among us hasn't pulled something back from the printer after identifying our own candidate as a "true pubic servant"?

Todd Spitzer

Clarification. I received the California Firefighters endorsement for my re-election in 2004 (second two year term). My web-site reflects endorsements from that race and has not been updated for this cycle (good point!).

However, the California Firefighters did NOT endorse me for my 2006 re-election (third term) based on my support of Measure D here in Orange County.

Let's be clear: I have probably received their support in the past because I have a very strong record of supporting law enforcement and fire. Despite them NOT supporting me, I will continue to support the rank and file who do a tough job.

Night Night Mikey

The endorsement probably came after 10pm and Mike was sleepy and did realize he accepted a union endorsement.

Just like when he voted to dismantle Prop 13 and unarm taxpayer protection. I am sure the union bosses are drooling over the opportunity to have their votes for higher wages and padded pensions at the expense of CA Homeowners come up on the Assembly floor after 10PM when Mike McGill's brain is on sleep.

Well Todd

After reading the above post, is that why you support law enforcement and firefighter issues?

Spitzer 2010 - DA

Todd will win in 2010...tell me names of interested parties...do they have name ID like Todd??? Experience??? The looks???

Doubt it...

rebecca

Hey, Jubal should buy the book "How to Know the Difference Between 'Implied' and 'Inferred'." Also? Thanks for that thing about how he should buy the Logic for Dummies book. Ever since my son schooled Shawn Fago last week with the wicked-acidic "Why don't you buy the book 'How to Multiply'?" it's become my favorite comeback. Now why don't you buy the book "How to Get in the Kitchen adn Make Me a Sandwich"?

Sptizing into the wind

Spitzer 2010,

One of those who will be running for DA in 2010 will be Tony Rackaukas - he has nowhere else to go and needs the money.

Another one will be Dick Ackerman - he needs the title to stay in power.

Another one will be Susan Schoreder- Mike Schoreder will need her there to stay in power.

Another one will be Scott Baugh who can't stand Spitzer and by that time will probably want a local elected title anyway.

On the Dem side, Joe Dunn will run in 2010 for DA. Lou Correa might run. Nadia Davis-Lockyer will take a stab at it. Deputy DA Claudia Alvarez has shown some interest in the race as an aspiring goal as well.

My point... Spitzer will not have a free run and will not win in 2010. His best chance for DA was this year. If he's smart, he'll jump in this race as write-in candidate, force a run-off and try to beat Rackaukas in November.

By the way, good looks are negated by a pompous, self-serving attitude.

Spitzer better get in this race now while there's only one other challenger.

Well Todd

I bet Todd will confirm his voting record is NOT 100% for police and fire union bosses. Yet they still support him.

McGill will be a whole lot better at saying 'NO' than Silva who already voted to give away the County while he benefitted.

Duh!

The reason that McGill got this endorsement is that the local hose boys hate Silva for his stand on their latest money grab and they leaned on their state bros to endorse against Silva. The calculus in Sacramento is currently that even the new Senate seat cannot give enough money and stroke to Tom Harman to get his spouse elected, so they opted to go with McGill. It is as simple as that.

OCFA and Proud

Duh!

You couldn't be further from the truth.

I spoke with a couple of our union board members and their story is significantly different than yours.

Not that I'm surprised.
