Could that be the deal struck with Ackerman? Maybe it was polling, but maybe it was more.
Tom Del Becarro on Political Vanguard is reporting that Assembly Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy will be stepping down from his leadership post on March 10th, probably just in time to file for retiring (?) Congressman Bill Thomas's seat. He says that Mimi Walters is for sure in the campaign to succeed McCarthy, but I wonder if he's missing Tran. Personally, I care for neither over Chuck DeVore, who proved at convention that he's the brains of the Caucus.
All of this is speculation. The resignation of Tran from the fight for the 34th is incredibly distressing if the guy got nothing for it from Ackerman. And what now happens to Nguyen and Righeimer? I was looking forward to that showdown, as it was seemingly uncomfortable for everyone.
A couple names bantered about to replace McCarthy - George Plescia (A McCarthy friend and stalwart conservative), Rick Keene (Budget guru and conservative from Chico), Sharon Runner (darkhorse candidate for now, but has both the saavy and brains to be a great leader)

While she may be the darkhorse candidate for now, she will be the one to bring the caucus back together after Mimi divides them up. Seriously, two words, Gina Zari.

As a former political staffer, Plescia would be a great Republican Leader.
