Today's top stories and some commentary from behind the Orange Curtain:
Starting off Saturday morning with some smarmy commentary from the Coquette on the just passed (239-182) Immigration Bill from the Dallas Morning News:
"Do we really want to clog up the federal system with decent people who are trying to be good samaritans," said Rep. Loretta Sanchez, D-Calif. Samaritan? A samaritan helps people in need and doesn't steal their resources. More local congressional reaction in the OCR: Boosting immigration enforcement. Ed Royce seems to have been particularly helpful and visible on this issue.
Fullerton School Board bends over for the ACLU (OCR): Fullerton laptop program stalling.
In following this story over the past weeks, does anyone find it troubling that these laptops (probably Apples, a perennial favorite among educators spending someone else's money) are coming in at $1500 when a basic and perfectly capable "Wintel" (which, due to market share, is probably more compatible with the family's home computer) with the same or better capability is one third to one half that price? A Linux machine would be even less expensive and probably just as good. How much money do you want to put into a grade schooler's laptop considering the potential for damage and theft?
Layoffs coming? Grocery strike related? LAT: Albertsons Is Said to Be Close to Buyout. The local angle,
A breakup of Albertsons could mean job cuts, especially if some stores are closed. Albertsons employs about 240,000 people. But Greg Conger, president of Local 324 of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union in Orange County, said "we are cautiously optimistic" that a buyer would keep Albertsons and Sav-on largely intact in the region and prevent substantial job losses.
Why did the LAT not list CA Senators and local Reps who signed this letter: Congress Lobbies for Boeing C-17? Surely Rohrabacher would've supported this.
Measure M hasn't even been balloted yet and won't expire for five years, but here's the spending plan in the LAT, DP: OCTA Lists Measure M Project Plans.
OCR on the growing economy: Luxury battle looming. My Hyundai dealership gives away free popcorn.
OCR on more hankie-wringing at the Great Park Politburo: Great Park's design will be a balancing act.
...board Chairman Larry Agran argued that "we need to reflect on the long path we have traveled." That was a long and EXPENSIVE path, Commissar.
