I've received two of these mailers. It's disgusting.

On a related note, an ad was running on ultra-conservative KRLA talk radio this morning, featuring David Horowitz talking about how Prop 77 is bad because it gives too much power to judges.

Did Horowitz even read the text of the initiative? It doesn't seem so.

Ted Lawrence

No Republican should vote for this measure. Anyone who wants to allow activist judges (no one else will volunteer to serve on a committee like this) to draw our political lines would start a diet by taking a cyanide capsule.

Are any members of the GOP embarassed this is a tactic being used?

I know I am.

>ultra-conservative KRLA<
MrWhipple: Can you explain to me the meaning of 'ultra-conservative' and how that is different from Conservative?
Thanks.

Anyone who wants to allow activist judges (no one else will volunteer to serve on a committee like this)

And you know this how, Ted Lawrence?

MrWhipple

Ted Lawrence: Anyone who wants to allow activist judges ... to draw our political lines would start a diet by taking a cyanide capsule.

Have you actually read the provisions of the measure, Ted? Do you know that the legislature picks the judges who are to do the redistricting? Do you know that Republican legislators have to pick Democratic judges, and vice versa, meaning that the most non-partisan judges are likely to be selected?

I didn't think so.

Logical: Can you explain to me the meaning of 'ultra-conservative' and how that is different from Conservative?

I use "ultra-conservative" to describe KRLA because every single host during the week toes the pro-Bush, social conservative line: Mike Gallagher, Bill Bennett, Laura Ingraham, Dennis Prager, Michael Medved, Hugh Hewitt, Michael Savage — all solid-right talkers.

Not that there's anything wrong with that — I happen to like and respect Dennis Prager, even when I disagree with him — but other talk radio stations in SoCal have a somewhat greater diversity of thought. KFI has Bill Handel and John & Ken, and KABC has Larry Elder and Mr. KABC, all of whose political leanings are all over the map. Yes, I know that KFI has Rush and KABC has O'Reilly and Hannity, but there's less lock-step-ness than at KRLA.

MrWhipple

To add to my previous comments: Not all KRLA talkers are always "pro-Bush." They're only anti-Bush when Bush isn't Bush.

For example, Laura Ingraham savaged Harriet Meirs the very day she was nominated, but not because she was a Bush crony, but because she wasn't conservative enough.

Since when have all judges been "activists"? Sometimes you have to put whats best for the state above whats best for the party.

Irvine GOPer

I received a letter from Dick Armey yesterday that convinced me that 77 deserves a NO vote. Picking up one or two new Republican legislators in Sacramento is not worth making Nancy Pelosi Speaker of the House.

Jason

Irvine GOPer, can you summarize Armey's argument for those of us who didn't get the memo? I'm a bit incredulous at how redistricting could make a minority Rep the Speaker.

Blog Watcher

Jason.

There is concern that between CA and other states, the GOP could lose their majority in the House. I've read (and I don't remember where) that Rove is not happy with Arnold's support of redistricting.

42 is the answer

Isn't the fact that only 20 seats are in play in the nation sufficient indication there is a need for change?

MrWhipple

Considering the way the Republican-controlled Congress and White House have dramatically increased the size and spending of the federal government, I see the possiblity of a Democrat-controlled Congress and the accompanying gridlock as nothing but a positive thing.

As bad as the Clinton years were, at least there was some control over spending. Ever since 2000, it's been a giant federal shopping spree — max out the cards! mortgage the house!

Chuck DeVore

Lazy GOP Congressmen to California: Representative democracy with all that messy voting stuff and uncertainty is so unpredictable. We true politicians-for-life can't be bothered with that. Vote "no" on 77.

I’m glad my handle is “Logical” and not yours; this doesn’t make sense.

"Laura Ingraham savaged Harriet Meirs the very day she was nominated, but not because she was a Bush crony, but because she wasn't conservative enough"
Bull! Meirs ideology was unknown at the outset (and still unknown at the end because it seems she has no ideology; she’s simply an opportunist (as pointed out by Al Rantel; of KABC btw)); Ingraham was attacking the nomination because it was purely cronyism and Meirs' was completely unqualified!
