Jim Gilchrist, self-styled Reagan Republican, voted for Green party candidate Peter Camejo for Governor because he liked Camejo plan to tax "the ultra-wealthy." You can hear this startling admission from Gilchrist in this soundclip.
You can also hear a number of other odd, un-conservative statements by Gilchrist at OC Organizer -- such as his entertaining the possibility of a hybrid amnesty. It may be a left-wing website, but they didn't make Gilchrist say these things.
The Gilchrist candidacy just becomes more bizarre as his handlers try to sell the man as something he isn't, which is unfortunate for the popular upswelling against illegal immigration to the extent that Gilchrist becomes the public face of their movement.
Okay, that's about as close to a nail in the coffin as you're going to get with me.
I am obstaining from December election.

Allan?
You've been denying the "tax the rich" comments for months. Care to comment?

It looks like Gilchrist's 15 minutes of fame ended in 5 minutes. This guy and his whole campaign just blew up.

An AIP guy voting for the Green Party. Sounds like professional help may be required here.
I just looked at the Cal Green Party Platform. Doesn't sound like the kind of things voters in South Orange County would favor.

I'll be reserving judgement until I get all the facts and hear from Jim himself. On its face it's obviously not good news if true. That's my take.

Allan
Are the words comming out of his mouth not enough facts for you ? Keep fighting for your issue, but you may want to admit that the horse you are on is a nag.
Posted by: Phil Paule | October 17, 2005 at 12:04 PM
Let me get this straight
Gilchrist wants to place additional taxes on the rich and is having a $1000 a person fund raiser this month.
Can you say hypocrite? Hey Jimmy- how many working class folks are coming to your $1000 a person boat ride ? So you want to tax the rich, and take their campaign money, wow !!!

Is that Gustavo doing the interview in those clips?

Here's the scoop, It's funny, but kind of sad, to see John Campbell teamed up with John Earl, the Green Party nutjob. That guy has stalked Jim Gilchrist for months. Security had to keep him away from Jim at the debate.
I asked Jim about this weeks ago, and he made it clear that he was just jerking this weirdo's chain. Jim has a sense of humor unlike most Campbell hacks. He wasn't running for anything, and didn't have any idea he'd have to be dealing with a bunch of political hacks trying to turn his jokes into campaign fodder.
He never voted for Camejo.
John Earl...that kind of sounds like a presidential assasin or something. Don't they all have two first names? Nice try John. End of discussion. Let's try to keep to the issues.
I know you guys really want to get away from John's votes for in state tuition for illegals, matricular cards, and his votes for state funded abortions, but keep trying.

So Allan, did you go back into time "weeks ago" to "get the facts and hear from Jim himself."
Too funny.

Allan - you and Gilchrist have lost all credibility. Anyone who listens to this tape can heard that Gilchrist was serious.
Posted by: Eldad Taylor | October 17, 2005 at 01:39 PM
Sorry, Martin: I'm not a radio guy save for AirTalk and the occasional "Ask a Mexican!" segment on the Al Rantel Show. I did, however, get Gilchrist to say he considers himself left-wing wacko (closing line).

This is pathetic. Gilchrist has made fools of his supporters. If what Bartlett wrote above is really Gilchrist's explanation, then it is even worse. What a joke!
Posted by: IrvineGOPer | October 17, 2005 at 02:02 PM
Was Gilchrist just joking about the whole Minuteman Project too? Is everything that comes out of his mouth a joke? Well, that is kind of a rhetorical question.
I am glad to see that Jim Gilchrist is really just a stand up comedian and not a serious political figure. If I pay the $1000 to go on his boat ride will I get to hear his whole stand up routine ? Does it start out “Did you hear the one about the illegal immigrant and the farmer’s daughter ?”
Live from New York !!!!-----It’s Jim Gilchrist

Is "Just joking!" going to be the Gilchrist campaign standard response whenever he says something off-the-wall or against type?
Was he "just joking" with all those other weird comments?
Does anyone have an anti-dote for the Kool-Aid Allan drank?
Posted by: Jubal | October 17, 2005 at 02:31 PM
It does'nt sound like he was joking at all. He was, in fact, complaining that he likes his tax ideas, voted for him, and his group was nonetheless attacked by Green party supporters. This is why one-trick-ponys should stick to their one trick. I have to agree that Jim Gilchrist's 15 minutes may have expired.

Wow, I suspected Gilcrhest was a nut. Now's he's proven it.
Campbell has got my vote.

I, for one, am amazed that in seventeen posts, in over three hours, with all the collective wisdom of OC Blog regulars, no one caught - or cared about - my "obstain" gaffe in the first comment. I AM NOT obstaining, as "obstain" is not a word. I AM however abstaining from the December election. Even if Gilchrist was joking (and I don't think he was judging from the tone in the tape), he lost my vote for lack of professionalism. Politics is serious, and so am I.

I think we all knew what you meant, Silence.

We thought you were just obfuscating the situation by being obtuse.
Posted by: Lurk | October 17, 2005 at 03:41 PM
I noticed "obstain" and was too polite to say anything about it. But the more I think about it, the more I like that word. There must be some practical use in politics for it.

Well then, I thank you all for being courteous.

I called Gilchrist's HQ. The first person I talked to denied it was Gilchrist's voice. The next person admitted it was Gilchrist, but said that he didn't really vote for Camejo. I asked him who Gilchrist voted for, and was told Gilchrist could not remember - only that he did not vote for Camejo!
Posted by: IrvineGOPer | October 17, 2005 at 04:19 PM
wow.
i think everyone needs to take a deep breath and spin this with a little more depth. bet that audio clip had a very interesting journey on its way to the ol' OC blog;
the enemy of my enemy is my friend...
i guess my deliberation process remains just a little less hysterical.
one mugged comment does not a complete picture make, at least not for me. i happen to find Campbell's multiple voting errors much more telling and prohibitive than even this weird little audio clip, especially as it was snapped up and whored out by a green party guy. if Jim did vote and have such respect for camejo, i find it funny that he had trouble even remembering his name.
and IrvineGOPer, yeah, i guess Gilchrist's flustered staffers (if what you say is true) didn't get the memo. sheesh, good hacks would have had their spin story straight, especially since the whole world revolves around the OC blog.
anyway, don't want to be a drag.
have fun with your new toy kids!

The guy Gilchrist voted for (Camejo) supported drivers licenses for illegal aliens. He also supported amnesty.
Is Gilchrist a hypocrite or a fool?
