From Steve Greenhut, off the Register's Blog (emphasis ours):
Supervisor Chris Norby just called and told me that the McClintock amendment to limit eminent-domain abuse failed in Sen. Joe Dunn's Judiciary Committee, with only Republican Sens. Dick Ackerman and Bill Morrow voting in favor of it. Here we see that Republicans favor the little guy, and Democrats don't mind seeing average folks driven off their land in favor of big developers. Sen. Dunn abstained from the vote. The committee did pass a two-year moratorium on eminent domain for owner-occupied dwellings, but that won't do much. It's on to the signature-gathering process to put this initiative on the ballot. Norby said the redevelopment folks were there, conjuring up images of crack houses and blight to justify their outrageous and unconstitutional trampling of property rights.
Don't get angry, get even: support efforts to put the McClintock bill on the ballot, and vote against any legislator who did not support this measure.

Socialists voting NO on this included One Bill Gil Cedillo (whose legislation to give illegal aliens drivers licenses has Dunn's support) and, from Soviet Monica, Sheila Keuhl.
Jon Coupal from HJTA told be outside the hearing that the initiative process would move pretty quickly now. Look for a petition at a Vons near you shortly.
