The Register had a well chosen juxtaposition of material in the Opinion section today re. Arnold. While they published an lengthy and generally positive editorial (The governor makes a forceful case) based on the hour he spent with their Editorial Board, they also printed the terrific Dan Weintraub's column from yesterday's Sac Bee (retitled): Tough-love guv? Maybe, maybe not. Even though they ran a 92-column inch article on a $50M house, the Register didn't print the very revealing full transcript of their meeting. It is on their website as The Governor's answers.
Weintraub isn't as optimisitic as the OCR that the Governator can really pull this off. He points out that two opportunities to reduce spending and put it in the Union's eye "despite his tough talk" were missed when he supported budget increases for the public schools and Medi-Cal -- he says "if there's a creature in the public sector gobbling up taxpayers' dollars, clearly it's Medi-Cal."
We might also be very disappointed with the Governor's stance on illegal immigration -- surely an issue sucking our money out of everything -- education, social welfare, transportation, corrections and law enforcement. Here's his response in the Q&A:
Q: I hear from a lot of readers who say the state's economic problems could be solved if we cracked down on illegal immigration. How do you respond to them?
A: Well I would then say, well how do you expect to do that? It's always easy. It's like saying there would be less people dying if we had no cancer. It would be easy, there would be less pollution if we had fewer cars. It's not the state, it's not in our power, to make that decision. It's the federal government.
No, Governor -- it's just as much, or more, OUR problem as the Feds. It's OUR border, OUR neighborhoods, OUR healthcare system, OUR ERs, OUR freeways and OUR schools that are under attack by this stampeding horde of aliens. We need to look no further than Santa Ana to see the mess they've made.
We have no clout with Washington, (many of us) voted for the wrong guy and are spending BILLION$ on this problem. The Register's front page said "you favor a guest-worker program" and "illegal immigrants contribute to (the) state's economy." Bull. With your national clout and stature (and potential), you could grab the Bushies' attention, money and put the fear of God into them by simply reworking that famous movie quote of yours a bit: "Make It Stop". If you really wanted to stick it to the Democrat-controlled Unions, take a strong stance against the Illegals as this is their future voter base and membership climbing the fence.
All this slobbering in the local press is fine, but let's see your energy and passion directed toward the elephant in the room.

Btw, Save Our License could use some support as they're not getting the petition signatures they'll need by mid-February.
