New Majority Profiled On FlashReport

On July 25 The New Majority invited OC media -- both old and new -- to their annual Media Roundtable (they held their first one last year) , which is kind of a report on progress they've made and what their future plans are. I posted a couple of items that came out of that meeting.

Jon Fleischman posted this more comprehensive account of the meeting and what TNM is up to on today's FlashReport, and also features a column by TNM co-founder Tom Tucker, who's currently chairman of the statewide umbrella organization, The New Majority/California.

As Jon makes clear in his post, TNM seems to be well on their way establishing themselves as a permanent Republican counterweight to the rich and powerful special interests that underpin California Democrats -- particularly the public employee unions and the trial lawyers. The business groups such as the California Chamber of Commerce are uncertain allies to the Republican cause, as demonstrated by their Vichy phase during the Gray Davis Administration.

GOP's Central OC Voter Registration Program Continues

One other item I'd like to quickly post about that came out of the media round table with The New Majority is the subject of voter registration in Central OC.

For the last three years, The New Majority has funded, to the tune of $390,000 thus far, a basically ongoing voter registration program in central OC, targeting the 34th Senate District and the 47th Congressional District.

The program erased the Dems 11% advantage in the 34th SD (although the Dems ultimately battled back to a 3% advantage), setting the table for Lynn Daucher's nearly successful effort to beat Lou Correa.

Sanchez_military New Majority Political Affairs Committee chair Dwight Decker delivered some news that is sure to give Rep. Loretta Sanchez pause: since this voter registration program started in the 47th CD, 55% of new registrants have been Republicans, while just 15% have been Democrats.

The current GOP voter reg drive in Central OC got under way at the beginning of summer and will continue through September.

Too bad Loretta pulled the rug out from under that fund-raiser Nancy Pelosi was going to do for the DPOC back in May. Their new executive director could probably have found a use for the money.

SD33 Watch: Walters, Sidhu Meeting New Majority Political Affairs Committee Today

I returned home from a media roundtable with the New Majority a little while ago. I'll write that one up later, but during the course of the two-hours lunch/interview sessions, it came out that Assemblywoman Mimi Walters and Anaheim Councilman Harry Sidhu were coming in this afternoon to meet with the New Majority's Political Affairs Committee, which is chaired by Conexant Chairman and CEO Dwight Decker.

The New Majority intends to endorse in this race, but will delay a decision until after candidate filing closes.

The last time Mimi Walters was in a contested primary -- when she ran for the 73rd Assembly District against then-Supervisor Tom Wilson and Vista School Board member Jim Gibson -- The New Majority endorsed her.
