67th AD Mailbox: McGill-McClintock Endorsement Brouhaha

Mailbox_72 The Non-Partisan Candidate Evaluation Council slate is one of the most venerable of the now-multitudinous slate mailers in California.

This election, Mike McGill bought the spot for the 67th AD primary, and lists an endorsement from Senator Tom McClintock.

Unfortunately for voters receiving this slate, that information is erroneous.

According to the Silva campaign, they  contacted McClintock's office, which verified that McClintock has no endorsed Mike McGill. Senator Dick Ackerman apparently also spoke to McClintock about the alleged endorsement, and McClintock reiterated that he has not endorsed McGill. In fact. Tom McClintock has not endorsed any candidate in this race.

It's too late for this revelation to have much, if any, impact on the outcome of the race, but it's worthwhile to report it for the benefit of any 67th AD readers whose vote is influenced by this non-existent endorsement. This reflects badly on a great, old slate.

UPDATE: I just heard from McGill consultant Joe Giardiello on this matter:

Jubal,

Can you please update your blog to correctly reflect the McGill slate situation.  It was a mistake by the slate and not the McGIll campaign.  The text they used was for another candidate.

Here is the text I sent to them:

End Illegal Immigration – Supported by Minuteman Project – Protect Prop. 13 – Endorsed by Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, National Tax-Limitation Committee and California Republican Assembly.  Retired U.S. Marine, Councilman and small businessowner.

As McClintock's district director I can assure you that I would never do anything like falsely claim his endorsement.  He'd have my ---- if he even suspected I did it on purpose.  Thanks.

Joe

67th AD Mailbox: Dianne Harman Hangs A Sharp Right At The Mailbox

Mailbox_68 I just got a hold of the newest Dianne Harman mail. My friends at Coronado Communications (who curiously stopped sending me their campaign mail shortly before these hit) apparently felt a hard right turn the weekend before the election was in order.

Here's hit piece on Jim Silva, accusing him of being a union puppet. Maybe Mrs. Harman ought to peruse her campaign reports, because this has the distinct flavor of the pot calling the kettle black. But hey, this is the same Looking Glass campaign season when I recieved a mailer froom Abel Maldanado saying he is a conservative and Tony Strickland is a liberal.

Then you have this anti-illegal immigration mailer which reminds me of an anti-Tom Harman hit piece the Diane Harkey campaign sent out a couple of months ago. I wonder how this one will go over with all of Mrs. Harman's Democratic supporters (Dianne has even more Democratic supporters than her husband -- she is really out-of-luck this isn't an open primary)?

For example, how does (Democratic) Costa Mesa Councilwoman Katrina Foley -- a severe critic of her city's plan to crack down on illegal immigration who also opposed closing down the city's day laborer center -- feel about this mailer, which contributes to the "climate of fear" politicians like Foley like to cite?

How does Mike Milliman -- the OC Central Labor Council Vice President who resigned from the OC Democratic Central Committee so he could endorse Mrs. Harman for the Assembly -- feel about this mailer?

Oh well -- I guess you campaign according to the political terrain of the district in which you are running.

67th AD Mailbox: Silva Hits McGill Again On Taxes And Eminent Domain

Mailbox_67 This mailer from Jim Silva for Assembly hit over the weekend, blasting rival Mike McGill for Cypress' eminent domain action against Cottonwood Church and his vote to lower the Prop. 13 threshold for raising taxes. A good hit piece from Gilliard, Blanning, Wysocki & Associates.

67th AD Mailbox: Silva And McGill Home Stretch Mailers

Mailbox_60 We're entering the home stretch of the June primary. Today and tomorrow will be the last days of really heavy campaign mail.

Here's one from Jim Silva that landed yesterday ( I believe), focusing on combatting illegal immigration and it's impacts.

And here's one from Mike McGill that landed yesterday -- accusing Jim Silva and Dianne Harman of being union puppets.

Mike McGill Plows Another $30,000 Of His Money Into Assembly Campaign

On May 25, Mike McGill dropped another $30,000 into his campaign for the 67th Assembly District GOP nomination.

McGill has now put $150,000 of his own money into his Assembly campaign.

He's not the only one to sink a significant chunk of personal cash in this race: Dianne Harman has loaned her campaign $100,000 -- although she's ultimately risking less financial exposure than McGill. After all, if she loses, her husband the state Senator-elect can erase that campaign debt. If McGill loses, he doesn't have a fund-raising angel who will make it all go away. After all, one-third of that $150,000 is a contribution -- not a loan -- that he can't pay back.

I tried checking Jim Silva's campaign report online at the Secretary of State, but for some reason they only have his OC Supervisor account there.

67th AD Mailbox: Dianne Harman Drops An Anti-Illegal Immigration Mailer

67th AD Mailbox: Dianne Harman, The "Endorsed Republican"?

Mailbox_41 This mailer from the Dianne Harman for Assembly campaign hits 67th AD mailboxes today. Harman's consultant have taken an oft-used line from the Diane Harkey for Senate campaign by promoting Dianne harman as the "Endorsed Republican" and featuring a slew of endorsements from mostly squishy GOP legislators.

67th AD Mailbox: Silva Slams McGill On Cottonwood Church/Eminent Domain

Mailbox_36It's punch and counter-punch in the 67th AD race. Today, the Jim Silva for Assembly campaign blasts Cypress Councilman Mike McGill for his role in the city's eminent domain action against Cottonwood Church. It's a damning piece. There's even a specialty website to go along with it: MikesLandGrab.com.

67th AD Mailbox: McGill Slams Harman and Silva As Union Liberals

Mailbox_35 This mailer from the Mike McGill for Assembly campaign hit mailbozes this past Thursday and Friday. Ouch -- it's pretty harsh. Sometimes I wonder if sometimes mailers like these aren't so over-the-top that voters don't buy them. But Joe Giardiello is a smart guy, so we'll see.

67th AD Mailbox: Jim Silva Invokes The Spirit Of Reagan

Mailbox_33 This Jim Silva for Assembly mailer hit mailboxes today in the 67th AD. It's an excellent positive piece, and timed well in the wake of the McGill campaign's execrable "cop-killer" hit piece.

Besides, you can't go wrong with Ronald Reagan.
