New Blog About Potential Replacements for Sheriff
I recently discovered this new blog about some of the possible replacements for Sheriff should Mike Carona be indicted on federal corruption charges. Paul Waters, the current police chief for the City of Santa Ana, and someone who is often mentioned as a possible candidate for Sheriff, seems to be getting a lot of attention on this new blog - http://www.smartsheriff.blogspot.com/. While I do not know if everything posted on "smartsheriff" is accurate, this bit of information about Paul Walters is alarming, if it is true:
He endorsed Lou Correa for Senate, Lockyer for Treasurer and made commercial spots for Loretta Sanchez...
Unfortunately, for this county to get a "smartsheriff" we still need to get rid of the corrupt sheriff. How is the recall coming along?

Paul Walters blamed his loss on the Republican Party when in fact he had endorsed Carona like everyone else did, before he decided to run. When he lost, he got so mad, he let Claudia Alvarez, a Democrat Councilwoman from Santa Ana, persuade him into switching to the Democrat Party.

The office of sheriff is nonpartisan. I am a lifelong Republican, a true Reagan conservative. With my preface out of the way, I think Walters is the guy to beat. But I would also keep my eye on Commander Martin. he commands a division that is probably larger than Santa Ana PD, and his credentials are impeccable. Had Station 18 deputies not been so myopic and intractable and supported him, he might be sheriff right now!

Hmmm, let's see...will this just be anti Paul Walters??? Or will this neutral muser come up with the bright (and objective, wink, wink)idea of an outsider...LASO Commander Ralph Martin???
Kinda looks like it's just anti Walters so far, with a couple of sentences about some other weak candidates thrown in for legitamacy. But time will tell...

Yea, Musing...just like that! (Sorry about the double post)

I think Obit prediction should google Ralph Martin and check out his resume. I was very impressed when I read the amount of experience in law enforcement that Mr. Martin has.If the office of Sheriff was based on qualifications alone the other people mentioned as possible replacements for our soon to be history Sheriff do not stand a chance.

Musing. I hate to disappoint you but the fact that Carona was the incumbant AND endorsed by the OC Republican party guaranteed his re-election. Station 18 Deputies and their Association had minimal impact on the Sheriff's election (other than spending money that could have been well spent in other areas). Hunt, Martin and that other guys campaign did minimal to change the outcome.

Eaaaaaasy, Standingby! I didn't say a thing about any of the candidates and/or their qualifications. My point was just that my .02 is betting this is going to be a poorly disguised campaign or slam tool, rather than an impartial blog. That's it.

Well, I first think anyone working at the SAPD is suspect, the city is a pit of crime. I really dont want any of them working as the OCSD. The worst part is Walters gets whomped by Corona and then ENDORESED him OPENLY.
Walters son works for OCSD and his dad endorses Corona, shoudlnt we have an impartial elected leader?
Did Chief Walters run for the LAPD, OCSD and other jobs while working for SAPD? What leader tries to abandon his troops? Stay on the 4th floor of the SAPD building.
Bill Hunt is a nobody a simple LT or what the OCSD calls a "Chief of Police Services" thats nothing more than a nobody at a normal department. Why should an LT be allowed to run when an Assistant should have two years at Captain?
Martin!?! isnt a Commander a fancy word for LT.? cant this guy just go away?

i APLOGIZE FOR MY SPELLING AND USE OF CAPITAL LETTER. i AM SIMPLY A GED, STOP LAUGHING AT ME.
OCSD FOR LIFE!

Sam,
Commander is pretty high on LASD. All of their Lt.s report to a Captain. All the Captains in a region report to a Commander.
Commander has MUCH more responsibility and a larger sphere of influence than a watch commander.

I think the editorial written by a former secret service agent summed it up for me. The fact that in the editorial he mentions that the OCSD is rip for a fed take over really makes this taxpayer mad as hell. We should not trust the entire command structure of the OCSD and really look at our options for outside leadership and before all the Hunt suppoters get upset, this is not a slam on the former Lt. just a comment on reality.

The OCSD isn't even remotely close to a federal takeover. The operation of the department is sound and the only issue left to be resolved is the guilt or innocence of Mike Carona who is accused of using his office for personal financial gain.
The OCSD as a department isn't even being reviewed by the Feds.

A department that is sound does not have the top three ranking officers serving time or about to serve time. As a outsider I only comment on what would be apparent to the taxpayers (me). I hope the next Sheriff of Orange County is not picked from anyone that is currently working in the department.I would have think that they may be tainted as well. Lets see some quality canidates willing to lead this department.

I believe that an outside candidate to replace Carona is a done deal. I'd keep my eye on Walters & Commander Martin. Could be a dark horse luring in the shadows, though

As much as I think an outsider is needed, there's no way the GOP will give up an ounce of power or influence they currently wield. Look for GOP-darling Jack Anderson to be annointed for the next Sheriff, IMHO.

Who are the people posting on this blog? Do you have any idea what you are talking about? Paul Walters has an amazing reputation and background. He has made his city better than it ever was. Crime is down under his tenure. Walters is ethical to a fault. Maybe that is why you need to put him down because you know he can not be bought. Get your info. correct and read. Just do not spout untruths to serve your own agenda. Paul Walters is one of the top choices for OC Sheriff. We will be a better county under his leadership.
