Lincoln Club of OC Endorses Carlos Bustamante
I'd learned yesterday the Lincoln Club of Orange County had endorsed Carlos Bustamante for Supervisor, but held off posting until they issued their official announcement -- but apparently the cat is out of the bag as Martin Wisckol has posted the coup for Carlos over at Total Buzz.
I'll post the Club's press release when it arrives, and take this opportunity to plug the Lincoln Club profile I wrote for the inaugural issue of Red County magazine. OCEA honcho Nick Berardino told me he liked it so much he's may well adopt the Latin aphorism I opened the article with -- Audaces Fortuna Iuvat: "Fortune Favors The Bold" -- as the slogan for OCEA's future bargaining efforts.
UPDATE (2:56 p.m.): Here's the press release from the Lincoln Club:
LINCOLN CLUB ENDORSES CARLOS BUSTAMANTE FOR SUPERVIOR
Jan. 18, 2007 - The Lincoln Club Board of Directors has voted to endorse Carlos Bustamante, candidate for the 1st District of the Orange County Board of Supervisors.
"Carlos Bustamante is the clear choice for supervisor," said Lincoln Club President Richard Wagner. He's committed to making county government more accountable to taxpayers, he'll fight to reign in public employee pensions, and he is the best candidate to represent the constituents of his district." Wagner added, "Tom Umberg would be a disaster for this county and for taxpayers. He has consistently voted in favor of increasing public employee pensions and authored legislation that allowed Bob Citron to put county taxpayer dollars into risky investments -- legislation that directly led to the county's bankruptcy at a cost to taxpayers of nearly $1 billion."
"We're confident that Carlos has the best chance of beating Umberg," Wagner added, "and we urge the other Republican candidates to step out of the race and support Carlos."

For several reasons, Bustamante is the flavor of the month and is winning the insider campaign, but how many LC members live in the First District? For that matter, how many voters in the First District have even heard of the Lincoln Club or Dick Ackerman or Bill Campbell?
This race will not be won by the candidate with the most "name" endorsements. It will be won by the candidate who does the best job of getting his or her supporters to actually vote.

Apparently the flavor of the month is victory. Let us review the last few days. Norby,Moorlach,Ackerman,BIA,Lincoln Club, OC Taxpayers Association,Marsh and Leyes. Those are just the one that I can remember. At what point do the other republicans concede, stop splitting the vote, save their money and face, unite behind the obvious Republican choice and prevent themselves from being tarred as responsible for electing Umberg?

All that is good for 2 votes, Leyes and Marsh (assuming Marsh does not vote for himself).

Now if only Republican voters in the district could stand him.

"At what point do the other republicans concede,"
too bad if they do, their names will still be on the ballots and someone will pick them, so seems a bit late to quit

So where is the Lincoln Club when it comes to taking on issues like the two Border Patrol agents who just went to prison for their role in shooting a illegal immigrant drug trafficker?
