Unfortunately, a Prop. 77 Win Wouldn't Fix Everything
From the Register this afternoon, Barbara Boxer on the Alito nomination:
“I believe this nomination is aimed at appeasing the most right-wing elements of the president's political base, and in so doing the president turns his back on the hopes and dreams, and the rights and freedoms of the majority of the American People. "Judge Alito may be soft spoken but if many of his opinions had prevailed the hard reality of his views would have hurt our families. "Had the President simply asked Justice Sandra Day O'Connor to finish this term on the Court, he could have avoided a bruising battle and united the country, instead of once again dividing it."
And you have to love how she just kicks the hell out of her opponents.
I mean. It's not even close.

Indeed, although Boxer has drawn some poor opponents? Herchensohn just came off as a right wing kook, and Matt Fong had the nice guy Gray Davis (before the energy crisis, at least) feel about him. Quietly competent, but doesn't light the fire under you, and not asd adept at Gray in dialing for dollars. And Lungren? What a joke. I'm glad the man stuck to his principles, but unfortunately those principles don't sell in California.

Is it too late to draft Tom McClintock for a higher calling than Lt. Gov.?

McClintock is a dream opponent for a Dem. Garamendi won't have any problem flattening him out.

Boxer's not the only loony in the Senate. This quote today from Chuck Schumer (D-NY):
Translation: "Alito would reinstate laws that segregate Blacks and force them to sit at the back of the bus."
Schumer has no shame.

Bruce Herschensohn was the best canddiate ever fielded against Boxer.
All of the others were too moderate (AKA liberal) to offer a contrasting choice.
Matt Fong? Bill Jones (the former legislative water-carrier for Pete Wilson)? Please. Their performance was just as bad as when Ed Zchau tried the "moderate" Republican model against liberal Alan Cranston years before.
Herschensohn was a good candidate in a bad year for Republicans. GHWB dropped California from the national campaign and that doomed the rest of the ticket. "Moderate" appointed INCUMBENT Republican Senator John Seymour was destroyed, in his Senate race while Herschensohn was only narrowly defeated among the same conditions.
